Slikour - Ventilation Mixtape Vol 1

In the early 2000's Siyabonga ‘Slikour' Metane ( Pronounced: Slicker ) blasted his way into the music industry with his compadres - Skwatta Kamp. Things were never the same again. To date, there has never been a local HipHop group that influenced the musical landscape in South Africa as rapidly as Skwatta Kamp did.

They are the only group that has managed to deliver message loaded joints for the soul and mind and at the same time heating up the dance floors across the nation whilst riding the crest of commercial success - making them the most influential HipHop brand today. With this much legend behind him and the support from his brethren, Slikour is ready to face the world as a solo artist with his debut album Ventilation Mixtape Vol 1 .

Slikour hails from the East Rand and is one of the founding members of Skwatta Kamp. He constitutes one fourth of the nucleus from which Skwatta Kamp emanated – Exercisem. The awesome four were Flabba, Nish, Smaks and the man himself, Slikour.

The Artist. The Hustler. The Entrepreneur.

Slikour's curriculum vitae reads like a true emcee – the now legendary battle against Snazz at Le Club, the freestyle sessions at YFM's Rap Activity Jam and his distinct on-point delivery on many street anthems. He cut his teeth and shaped his rhyming skills with his best friend and fellow group member Smaks in the cipher circuit - destroying emcees and leaving a sizeable emcee body count (metaphorically that is)!

In a chance meeting with Sizwe Zako, Slikour was given the opportunity to get into a recording studio and that was the start of a tremendous career in HipHop.

Slikour's meteoric rise has seen him become one of the most recognisable names in the music industry. He is the face of the Edgars Youth Cinema ads and recently became a spokesperson for Khomanani, a government initiative tackling the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

He also quietly goes about doing his bit to inspire students to participate in job shadowing. The students shadow Slikour in the studio, at gigs i.e. a day in the life of Slikour. As he says, “This life is not easy! You have to work to realise and maintain your dream.”

He is also a businessman and a partner in Buttabing Entertainment. The indie-label that introduced the world to Skwatta Kamp and now, its new franchise player MY MAN.

Slikour has had the opportunity of touring throughout Africa and sharing stages with the likes of U.S. HipHop Ludacris, Will Smith, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Ghana's VIP, Kabelo, Malaika, B.O.P., Tamara Dey, Tweak, N8tives…to mention just a few.

Winner of the Best Rap Album South African Music Award (SAMA 9 &10) in 2003 and 2004 respectively, plus the Best HipHop Metro FM Award in 2003 with his group Skwatta Kamp. Slikour is no stranger to the big time and is ready for greater things with this Mixtape which is sure to catapult him into the stratosphere!!

The album Ventilation Mixtape Vol 1 is layered with juicy basslines and laid back flows, party anthems and streets with joints including underground songs to keep the HipHop die-hards and heads satisfied – the vibe is good!

Semitone, already known for Skwatta Kamp's “Umoya” and “Clap Song”, took on most of the responsibility of production on the album. Joining him on the production team were Amu, Dome and Omen.

Ventilation Mixtape Vol 1 includes some of HipHop's freshest and most influential entertainers such as HHP, Kruna, Proverb, Jevega, Nkuli, Pro-Kid, INFA & Flabba (Skwatta Kamp), MY MAN, Zulu Mobb, Hidden Force, Zubs, David Kau, Pabi Moloi (MetroFM), Mpho (YFM), Black Rabbit, Mr Selwyn, Wicked and Amu.

Ventilation Mixtape Vol 1 has a lot of weight. Slikour has found a way to blend street music with commercial savvy acquired through his experiences with Skwatta Kamp.

The jump off single “ Banga Banga ” is currently tearing up radio airwaves and is warming up to hit club dance floors across South Africa very soon.

The album is being released through a partnership between Buttabing Entertainment and The David Gresham Record Company.
